North Eastern Club News February 2019

Speaker at the October meeting at Allerton Court Hotel, was Brent Crothers, who spoke of dairy farming in his native New Zealand.

He explained that all cows, even show cows, live outside all year round. The cattle are mainly smaller and lower yielding than in this county, with tight calving margins meaning cows empty after two services are culled regardless.

He also told us how budgeting is very difficult as prices are set retrospectively, depending on the milk quality, and this can result in negative payments. He spoke about his prefix Toi-ToiHolsteins and Jerseys and explained how he has many cattle under this prefix spread all over the world.

The November meeting’s speaker was 2018 President’s Medal winner, Helen Eastham, who gave a fantastic presentation on her life and her fantastic trip with Semex to Canada.

She spoke about the various types of housing in Canada, ranging from tied stalls to loose housing. She referred to the huge amount of genomic and IVF work that is going on there.

Helen attended the Royal Winter Fair where she saw the highest-priced cow sell for $108,000!

Young members had a very enjoyable time at the All Britain All Breeds Calf Show in Peterborough, taking eight calves and 11 members.

Special mentions should go to Littlebridge NY Solo Sonya from the Miles family who came fourth in the December/January class and also to James Robinson’s and James Pratt’s Studdah Cyprus Maude who came sixth in the August/ September class.
