Edition 4 - 2023 - East Midlands

Our Stock Judging season started off with the Linear on the 30th of April hosted by John and Lynn Faux at Oak Tree Farm, Osbaston, home of the Kenmar Herd. Philip Oliver was our judge and guided us through the day. The weather was kind and there was a good turnout, particularly of young members . Many thanks to Phillip Oliver and our hosts John and Lynn Faux and some delicious pork rolls.

The first of our Stock Judging Evenings was hosted by the Griffin Family at Toll Gate Farm, Cotes De Val, Lutterworth, the home of the Deval Herd on the 26th of May. It was great to see so many people come along to an evening of Stock Judging and fine refreshment. Many thanks to our judge Andrew Spicer and the Griffin Family.

Our second Stock Judging was hosted by the Tomlinson Family and the home of the Sandyford Herd at Charnwood Forest Farm Nanpanton on the 6th of June. We were treated to a great selection of cows and heifers to peruse and our judge for the evening was Alan Timbrel who provided guidance, entertainment and light controversy amongst those who attended. It was a great evening with lovely refreshments: many thanks to Alan and the Tomlinson Family.

Towards the end of June our Herd Competition took place, kindly judged by Richard Lucas of the Meinspride Herd in Lancashire. Judging took place over 3 days and in all weathers. Biblical rain whilst visiting the Thomas family Wolston herd resulted in being a marooned in their cow shed for an hour: consequently, a thorough herd inspection took place! Many thanks to our stewards and Richard Lucas for sparing their time, expertise and hospitality. Messers Winters and their Corringham Herd were awarded Regional Winners which resulted in them being placed second in the National Premier Herd Competition: congratulations to the Winters Family.

On the 6th of August we had a showing, clipping calf preparation workshop for our young members hosted by the Thomas Family at Model Farm, Kimcote. George Thomas shared his knowledge and expertise and guided the young members with demonstrations and advice throughout the day. After a clipping demonstration the young members paired up and clipped some of the Thomas’s calves and went on to show them with guidance in the ring. Many thanks to George and the Thomas Family, a great day was had by all.

A week later we headed to the HYB Rally in Somerset hosted by the South West Club. A great weekend of competition and socialising was had by everyone. A fun evening of Bongo Bingo on Friday was followed by the National Stock Judging Competition on Saturday. Notable successes were achieved by Andrew Thomas who came first in the Senior Linear, George Thomas came second and together they won Senior Team Linear. Andrew Thomas came third in the Senior Stock Judging. Much fun was had at the mini–Glastonbury Saturday night then Field to Photo on Sunday. Everyone worked well as a team with George clipping, Frank holding, and Will Moore and Mark Griffin being awarded 4th in the washing and Andrew leading. Thank you to the South West Club, Holstein UK team and Davlea Holsteins for a wonderful weekend.

On Sunday 24th September we held our Calf Show by kind permission of the Onions Family at Cricket Field Farm, Wysall. Frances Mellor kindly agreed to be our judge.
