Derbyshire Coach Trip

Our coach trip this year took us to Shropshire visiting the Woodmarsh herd of Mick and Catherine Gould farming 550 acres milking 300 cows three times a day. They showed us several family groups of cows including the Zandra, Melody and Neoma families before walking into the shed to look at the rest. The Dry Cow shed as now been taken over by a new Pedigree Limousin herd, but plans are there to put up a new shed and numbers going up to 350.

Mick told us that he had been using genomic bulls but had moved back to proven and was looking for type and plus on milk.

We then moved onto to our next farm Styche Holsteins owned by the Seaton family milking 270 three times a day of which 39% are heifers. Ed uses all genomic bulls and we had a leisurely walk through the cows pointing out several show and outstanding cows of which are housed all year round. They have an impressive preg. rate of 24% and herd average of 12,500 litres. Thank you to both our hosts on a very enjoyable day.

We have also had another exiting evening visit to one of our own farms The Easom Family looking at the Broomhouse herd who won our Derbyshire Herd Competition last year. Many things to see at this farm with some excellent cows out in the field and further cows inside a chance to look at the digester which has been in for 5 years and then a visit into the calf rearing area followed by a lovely pie and pea supper with tea and cakes. Thanks to all the Easom family for hosting a great night.

Our Hyb members had an excellent day at their training day held at Fernydale Farm Earl Sterndale our thanks to Yasmin and Bill for hosting and special thanks to Steve Mc Loughlin for travelling from Ireland to give the training.  Everyone enjoyed the day learning about choosing your calf, feeding it for the show ring, clipping, washing and showmanship tips.
