Cornwall Summer Roundup

It’s been yet another busy period for the Cornish Holstein Club. We’d like to take this opportunity to congratulate all members on their success as numerous local shows, it’s great to see the club being represented in such a positive way throughout the county.

The annual herd competition was judged in June, with a welcome increase of entries this year we were delighted to have Andrew Dutton of the Royan herd and Matt Jenkin judging the entries. We thank them both for taking the time out from their busy schedule, and thank all members who provided accommodation, stewarding services and catering on their journey around the county.

We must take this opportunity, to congratulate Michael Smale of Glebewin Holsteins for being voted in as Chairman for The Holstein UK Board. The club is very proud of his achievement. It’s been a busy time for the Smale family, congratulations must also go to Michael’s daughter Gemma Smale-Rowland for being shortlisted for the Dairy Industry Woman of the Year Award, as well as being invited to speak at the Women in Dairy Conference in September.

We had two herd visits planned over the summer, with the first being a joint visit with the North Devon Holstein Club to Thoroughborough Holsteins by kind permission of the Ley Family, the weather was beautiful and all club members who attended thoroughly enjoyed. Thank you to the Ley family for being such great hosts.

The second visit was to Hartom Holsteins by kind permission of the George Family. Yet again, we were blessed with fantastic weather, it was great to visit one of the newest members of the club. Thanks, must also go to the George family for their wonderful hospitality.

Seven Holstein Young Breeder Members ventured to South Wales for the HYB rally. William Neale, Jessica Hugo, Jason Blake, Roxii Smith, Thomas Oatey, Cari Thomas and Steven Harris all had a fantastic time with highlights being:

  • Steven Harris: 1st place senior linear
  • Steven Harris and Cari Thomas: 2nd place senior linear team
  • William Neale: 4th place junior stock judging
  • Roxii Smith: 8th place ‘A Team’ showmanship
  • Jessica Hugo teamed up with our friends over the Tamar and joined the Devon ‘B Team’. She was holding for the second place ‘B Team’ clipping team, and was part of the second place overall ‘B Team’.

The seven members thoroughly enjoyed the weekend from start to finish and would like to thank the South Wales Club and Holstein UK for putting on such a great event! They’re already excited for Shropshire in 2020!

Future Dates for your diary…

The South West All Breed Calf Show – Tuesday 27thAugust 2019, Royal Cornwall Showground

This includes the qualifier for the ABAB calf show in Peterborough. We are excited to have Matt House (Chedhunt) as master judge, and Laura Sales (Aavalon) as all breeds handler judge.

The On Farm Challenge Presentation Night – 25thOctober 2019, Lanhydrock Golf Club

Now in its second year The "On Farm Challenge" is an event run by The Cornish Holstein Club as a club competition replacing our Annual Evening Show which has been experiencing lower exhibitors over the years due to factors beyond our control such as bTB restrictions, labour issues and time constraints; not forgetting the expense involved in showing a cow.

The whole idea behind it, as the name says that it’s "On Farm". This abolishes the need for taking the animal off the farm - we bring the Judge to you! NO halter breaking is necessary, as the animal is simply shown off individually in the yard! NO pre-movement tests are needed, NO extra expense of labour cover!

We are extremely lucky to have Peter Prior, an esteemed dairy judge and ex Holstein UK Classifier to judge this year’s proceedings. As well as judging many big dairy shows, he’s also achieved great success in the showring with his herd Designer Holsteins. We are excited to have him on board.
