From Senior Winner of the National Reasoned Stockjudging Competition to Judge at the Mila Show

Where will HYB take you?  HYB member Matthew Williamson, of Border & Lakeland Club, tells us about his first appointment as master judge at the Mila Show in Malmo, Sweden, which took place in February this year…

In 2016 I was the senior winner of the National Reasoned Stock Judging Competition at the Weekend Rally, hosted by the West Midlands club, and placed second at National Competitions Day in Penrith. This earned me a place to represent Holstein UK at the Open Junior Show in Cremona, Italy, alongside fellow young members Robert Morley, Peter Cotton and Bob Lawrence.  Whilst competing in Cremona my stock judging skills must have impressed, as I was subsequently invited to judge at the Mila Show!

I was absolutely delighted to be asked to judge in Sweden. It has been an ambition of mine to develop my judging to be officiating at shows, but I had never imagined that the first show I would be invited to be master judge at would be abroad. I was initially quite nervous at the prospect of being in the centre of the ring, but soon settled into it after giving reasons on the first couple of classes. I really enjoyed my trip to Sweden; all the farmers I met were extremely friendly and very hospitable.

Whilst at the show, I also judged the showmanship classes and attended the Swedish Holstein Society’s Winter Meeting, where I gave a presentation on my experience of farming in the UK. I would encourage all young members to get stuck in and give it your all in stock judging and linear assessment at National Competitions Day and the Weekend Rally, as they can open up all sorts of opportunities around the world.
