UK Team Announced for Open Junior Show in Italy

Four talented and ambitious young Holstein breeders have been selected to compete in Cremona, Italy, at the Open Junior Show. Holstein Young Breeders (HYB) is delighted to announce its senior and junior competitors who will be flying the flag for Team UK. The team includes:

•    Senior competitors: James Doherty (Shropshire) & William Booth (Lancashire)
•    Junior competitors: Jodie Nutsford (Western) & Rosie Dennison (Lancashire)

Taking place from Wednesday 25th until Saturday 28th October, the Open Junior Show gains international recognition for its clipping, showmanship and stock judging competitions, with breeders from all across Europe travelling to take part.  On arrival, members are assigned a heifer ready for clipping, showing and judging on the Thursday. On Friday, competitors put their knowledge to the test with a technical quiz, whilst Saturday sees them attend Italy’s prestigious National Holstein Show. Throughout the three days, competitors receive marks for each aspect of the competition, with the overall scores rating the top spots and winners.

Meet the Team

Senior Competitors
James Doherty (Shropshire)

Twenty-six-year-old James Doherty farms a small herd of elite pedigree cattle. Being able to represent the UK with an animal he bred at the All European Championships in Colmar, France, has been a real highlight of his showing career. He also won the national clipping competition at this year’s HYB Weekend Rally and he is a proud member of Shropshire Holstein Breeders Club. His passion and enthusiasm will surely be an attribute to the UK team.

William Booth (Lancashire)
William has been involved with Lancashire HYB for 9 years. At home he milks 120 cows with 160 followers under the prefix Feizor Holsteins. In 2005, the family had champion at the Royal Show and in 2011, Jordan Flo was champion calf at the All Breeds All Britain (ABAB) Calf Show. Winning Holstein UK’s Premier Pedigree Herd Competition in 2012 was a real highlight for the Booth family. Just 19 years old, Williams is a keen stock judger and enjoys clipping cows and calves both at home and at shows. His work ethic and ability to work well in a team will be a great asset during his Cremona experience.

Junior Competitors
Jodie Nutsford (Western)

From the age of four, showing Holstein cattle has been a huge part of Jodie’s life. Over the years she has competed successfully at local shows, ABAB, National Competitions Day (stock judging and linear assessment) and the Field-2-Foto competition at the Weekend Rally. She is now actively part of her family’s Riverdane prefix and the Western Holstein Club. Ahead of Cremona she is most excited to be working with other young enthusiasts in the dairy industry worldwide and having the opportunity to further her experience of animal preparation, particularly in clipping, and expand her knowledge of the dairy industry across the European market.

Rosie Dennison (Lancashire)
Rosie is 16 years old and a member of Lancashire HYB. She helps on the family farm, Denmire Holsteins, and enjoys training calves and clipping. In 2016 she won the intermediate showmanship at ABAB and has competed at National Competitions Day in linear assessment and stock judging, winning the linear assessment for the last three years. From her trip to Cremona she hopes to gain further knowledge of the dairy industry, make new, like-minded friends and help the UK team succeed.

Miriam Bagley, Events & National HYB Coordinator for Holstein UK, comments, “Holstein Young Breeders is thrilled to announce the four competitors for this year’s Open Junior Show. Heading for Italy, these four individuals have excelled across all aspects of HYB competitions and are credit to the organisation. We wish them all the very best of luck as they head off this October to represent the UK.  We will be sharing their updates and results on the Holstein UK social media platforms whilst out in Cremona.”
