Summer Herd Competition Results 2020

2020 has definitely been a year we will all remember and one which will go down in history. We had some exceptional herds entered into this years Summer Herds Competition. Once again, the club put forward some outstanding cattle for our experienced and respected judges, Malcolm & Jean Hutchinson Bowerberhill prefix. We are lucky to have this calibre of judge within our area so we could proceed with the competition and adhere to Covid rules & restrictions.
We are forever indebted to our extremely kind sponsors Lely Longtown and Lloyd Tractors, both of which kindly provide a fantastic prize fund for the members, which was gratefully received. 3 days of full on judging took place with 15 members taking part in the competition. The Holstein Young Breeders excelled themselves once again with quality and enthusiasm making the judges decisions extremely difficult.
Notable classes from the week was the Intermediate and Junior cow classes with 13 & 12 forward for both classes respectively. There was quality in depth in both classes with Heathersgill Solomon Ruth coming out tops in the Intermediate Cow class and Wormanby Motivator Rolls gaining top honours in the Junior cow class.
We had strong entries throughout all the classes which didn’t make Mr & Mrs Hutchinson’s job any easier. The Holstein Young Breeders’ class being especially difficult to place. It is lovely to see the depth of knowledge they all have of their calves and the skill and ability in how they are able to present them, was noted by Mrs Hutchinson.
Taking top honours in the small herds was Messrs Todhunter with their Woodend Herd. Their farm sits on the shore of Bassenthwaite Lake; both views from the field and within the field were exquisite. Filling top place in the Large herds was Messrs Morley’s Petteril Herd, who also took the overall trophy home with them, with a world class herd of cattle showing consistent dairyness and strength throughout the entire herd.
A huge thank you to our sponsors once again Lely Longtown and Lloyd Tractors. Also to our sensational judges Malcolm & Jean Hutchinson, they stewarded, judged and took themselves around, without them and the fantastic entries we wouldn’t have been able to run this competition; so a big thank you from me to have made  this all possible.
