Summer 2022 - Derbyshire

It was nice to go on our summer coach trip again this year and what a lovely day we had visiting 2 excellent farms in Lancashire. Our morning visit to The Bilsrow herd with a very warm welcome from James and Helena Tomlinson enjoying a lovely cup of coffee and cake, James explained how we would see his new shed and parlour only been milking in the parlour a month and is new cubical shed 2 weeks of which he designed himself after picking up ideas while travelling and visiting many other farms when judging. James is a 4^thgeneration farmer now milking 310 cows through a 40 : 40 rapid exit parlour twice daily supplying a local cheese company 2 miles down the road with an average of 11,000 litres 4.3 BF, 3.3 Protein. He was using sexed semen and Aberdeen Angus for his beef semen calving his heifers in around 2 – 2.3 and since going into the new shed it allowed him to keep is milking heifers in a separate group which was working very well.

With recommendation from James, we then moved to Guys Lodge restaurant where we enjoyed an excellent roast Pork dinner with sticky toffee pudding with ice cream.

For the afternoon we then moved on to visit the Sandcrest Herd owned by the Sanderson family with a very entertaining afternoon looking at cows milking 400 with 80 Ex and 200 VG’s averaging 9,000 litres on a simple TMR system with no extra corn. With several groups of cows brought out for us to see, the first group of heifers seen were a very impressive and mainly sired by Cogent Supershot, other bulls used in the herd were Wintersell Titan and they had won many times with the De-Su Gillespy progeny group and the last group of cows we looked at was a group of Ex cows. The afternoon finished off on the lawn with a drink and a lovely spread of cakes and fruit which was served with the help from some of their 16 grandchildren of which Mr Sanderson said they are there for the future.

We have held 2 stockjudgings this spring thanks must go to our hosts TR & EC Ball of Sudbury and The Herridge family of Tissington for hosting these events and our judges for the occasions were Mr Phil Arrell, Mr Mark Knutsford, and Mr Phil Oliver for the HYB Linear.

It was nice to see so many members out again and enjoying themselves and also welcoming some new members along to. The overall results are as follows.
