Staffordshire Holstein Club - April News

Peter Appleby, Senior Partner, Bagshaws, Renowned Dairy Cattle & Farm Dispersal Auctioneer

Peter passed away at the age of 90 on the 2nd February 2021 with his son Robert by his side. Born in 1930, the Appleby family farmed at Allestree and Peter had a brother, Tony who later in life became a very successful local fencing contractor.

Few will know that Peter served in the RAF for a two year stint at the end of the war for National Service and actually joined Bagshaws in 1948.
Peter had a great love for Derby County Football Club together with both county and international cricket.  He held a season ticket at Derby County for many decades and could also be seen at the test matches at Lords and other internationally renowned cricket grounds.

Peter rose through the auctioneering ranks at Bagshaws under the guidance of the late Edgar Naylor and was extremely well renowned for his professional ethics and gentlemanly conduct with regard to all his clients, staff and customers.  He was Secretary of the local Holstein Friesian Breeders Club together with Ayrshire clubs for a phenomenally long period of time and arranged many successful events for those clubs over the decades.

In the 80’s Peter rose to be Senior Partner at Bagshaws at Uttoxeter and on many weeks would be seen heading the dairy team to sell towards 200 head at the weekly Wednesday sales.  He had a love of smart cars and Indian food as well as his sporting passions.

Peter will be remembered as an extremely hard-working true gentleman in every sense of the word who was a superb teacher and was held in high respect by all who knew him.
