This week sees the August edition of the industry-wide sire summary release or ‘Proof Run’. Each edition sees bulls receive updated proofs and allows for the release of new bulls onto the market. Bulls go up, bulls go down. However, one thing remains constant…the high quality and strength of the Genus ABS line-up, strongly backed by the genetic power of the DeNovo programme.
As they gain their production proofs, we celebrate the prolific impact that DE-SU 14222 KENOBI, ABS CRIMSON and ABS SASSAFRAS have had in contributing to the genetic progress of British dairy farms in recent years. KENOBI and CRIMSON have been used extensively as sires of Sons, with 51 Sons between them that top the £PLI charts today. The third of this magnificent trio is ABS SASSAFRAS. With over 4,000 registered progeny in the UK, SASSAFRAS has been one of the most popular bulls of our time and we are delighted to release his first son Denovo SIZZLER to the Sexcel® line-up. Just like his Father, Genus/ABS EMEA Dairy Brand Manager Hannah Goodwin comments “SIZZLER comes packed with a genomic proof that provides Production, high health traits completed by his desirable golden ratio of extreme Chest Width”. Hannah continues, “The story of the above proven Sires this August is one of reflection and excitement. We reflect on their achievement in delivering on their genomic promise, whilst at the same time we turn to the future in confident anticipation of the success of their Sons”.
Genus/ABS now own 58 out of the top 100 genomic £PLI sires available in the industry, 31 of those Sires are from our global DeNovo breeding programme, committed to providing the industry with high-ranking, differentiated genetics. What is more, our top 58 £PLI bulls are born from 23 different Sires; aside from the high standard of genetics, we are proud to promote diversity within our dairy portfolio.
One of many fantastic Sons of superstar De-Su 14222 KENOBI include no more greatly anticipated than our #1 £PLI sire (#2 in the industry), Wilra KNOWHOW (pictured below), weighing in at a phenomenal £PLI of £909. KNOWHOW is the complete all-rounder, providing double-digit component percentages, (0.14% Fat and +0.10% Protein), which is extremely impressive given his abundance of production (+908 KGS Milk). KNOWHOW has superb health traits; Calving Ease (+0.8), Daughter Fertility (+8.0) and Maintenance (-13KG).
Other chart-toppers include the #1 Autumn Calving Index (£ACI) Sire Bomaz PLATT (+£775 £ACI). Alongside double-digit components (+0.31% Fat, +0.10% Protein) and extreme Daughter Fertility (+10.7) – equating to +14.3 Daughter Fertility on the £PLI base, PLATT provides high health traits, superb Legs & Feet and will produce small and compact cattle.
Other Sexcel® launches this August include Pine-Tree HEROIC Son, Denovo HASLEY who is the #1 Sire for Fat KG at a whopping +64.9 KGS (+0.41% Fat) – a whole kilogram over the #2 sire. Also, Sherdon ELEVATED RED (pictured below), Son of former Icon sire Schreur SHIMMER*RC joins the Sexcel® line-up. European Breeding Programme Manager, Hendrik Albada comments “ELEVATED Red provides a comprehensive proof with superb Production +708KG Milk and superb confirmation traits (+2.44 Type Merit, +2.32 Mammary & +1.55 Legs & Feet.). ELEVATED RED will produce Daughters with added chest width, wide rumps and well add set to the legs. Not forgetting, exceptionally attached mammary systems and textbook Locomotion (+1.69)”.
From a Friesian perspective, the stud has had an excellent proof run, we have 8 of the top 10 proven sires and 7 of the top 10 genomic Sires available in the UK (ranked on PLI). Carrickshock GTW is the top bull overall with a fantastic all-round proof at £410 PLI, £430 ACI and £389 SCI.
Overall, we are extremely proud to introduce, arguably, the most diverse and complete range of conventional and Sexcel® sires in the industry today.
With 45 bulls sitting in the top 10% for £PLI (greater than £780 PLI), we are extremely delighted to ensure that whatever your business goal, we can help you to increase profitability through genetics.
