The National Bovine Data Centre (NBDC) part of the Holstein UK group, exists to develop industry-leading analysis of data for the improvement of dairy production in the UK. NBDC holds information for all dairy breeds encompassing production, animal conformation and genetics within a database holding over 14million animals.

We are seeking a Classifier who is passionate about dairy cow breeding, has great customer service skills, is computer literate, with a committed and diligent working style. Previous experience working in a dairy cattle breeding environment is essential, including knowledge of pedigree parentage and cattle breed characteristics.

NBDC provides classification service to members of 10 dairy and 12 beef breed societies and the Classifier appointed will be expected to provide services to both.


Purpose of the Job

The Classifier will be responsible for the accurate linear assessment and type classification of bovine breeds, adhering to breed directives and standards as established by the breed society. The role involves promoting the Society’s programmes, providing expertise on type evaluation, and ensuring member satisfaction through professional service. The successful candidate will act as an ambassador for the National Bovine Data Centre (NBDC) while fostering strong relationships with members.

This role offers a unique opportunity to work directly with the members and customers of the Holstein UK Group, ensuring the highest standards in bovine breed classification and providing essential support to breed development across the UK.


Key Responsibilities

Classification:

  • Professionally engage with members, ensuring high levels of customer satisfaction.
  • Collect accurate and thorough data on cattle in line with breed development guidelines.
  • Perform linear assessments and type classifications to accurately reflect the conformation and standards set by the Breed Society.
  • Attend and represent the Society at designated shows and events, demonstrating type classification, linear assessment, and breeding tools.
  • Conduct ‘LIFT’ inspections, ensuring high standards of accuracy and professionalism.
  • Work independently of external commercial companies.
  • Adhere to the rules, regulations, and guidelines established by the Society, business partners, and third-party organizations.
  • Collaborate as part of the Classification Team, contributing to the overall performance and success.
  • Provide support to the Senior Classification Advisor and the wider team when necessary.
  • Coordinate effectively with Head Office to manage schedules and cancellations.

Qualifications/Experience/Skills:

  • A solid understanding of agriculture and experience in cattle classification or a related field.
  • A keen eye for detail, capable of assessing physical attributes of cattle with accuracy and precision.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • A good knowledge of cattle breeding, particularly dairy cattle.
