Get Ready for the HYB Weekend Rally

As we look forward to the HYB Weekend Rally, National HYB Coordinator Naomi Lewis takes a look at what makes the event one of the highlights of the HYB calendar year North East HYB Club members are gearing up for the HYB Weekend Rally which they will host from 12th to 14th August. Young breeders from across the UK will descend on North Yorkshire and County Durham for a wide range of activities involving learning, development and, of course, plenty of fun!

Alongside the competitive element of the weekend, HYB members will participate in mini competitions and a farm walk. This is all part of an objective to develop vital skills in the next generation to enhance knowledge and understanding of cattle breeding and management. The event also enables the members to meet, network and make friends with other passionate young breeders.

On Friday 12th August, HYB members will have the opportunity to visit Metcalfe Farms in North Yorkshire to find out more about their extensive enterprise before travelling across to Hatfield College in Durham, their base for the weekend.

Saturday will see young breeders compete in the highly-anticipated National Reasoned Stock-Judging and Linear Assessment competitions at Belaw Farming and once the competitive element of the day is complete, members will participate in other activities including the Great North East Challenge. The Challenge includes a number of fun inter-club games and activities, giving young breeders a chance to win back the price of their weekend.

Saturday night promises to be a great opportunity for the young breeders to relax and enjoy themselves at the fancy dress disco. A highlight of the Rally each year is seeing which Club has been the most creative with their fancy dress, and we’re looking forward to seeing some imaginative outfits for this year’s A Day at the Races theme.

Another highlight of the weekend is the ‘Field-2-Foto’ competition which will take place at Darlington Auction Mart on Sunday 14th August. For this challenge, teams of five are assigned a calf, which is supplied by the Club and picked at random during the weekend, which arrives basically clean and halter broken.

First of all, the team puts their best clipper forward, whose score not only goes towards the team total but also puts them in the running to win the prestigious National Clipping Competition. Two members then wash the calf, before the entire team gets involved with the final preparation, after which one member undertakes the showmanship element of the competition. The finale involves the entire team working together to photograph the calf.

The Weekend Rally is one of the highlights of the HYB calendar. It is so important that our young members can get away from their farming lives to enjoy the positivity and passion of their friends and other young breeders. With its diverse range of activities, learning opportunities and chance to meet with friends, members leave the event with valuable knowledge and life-long friendships. Our objective at HYB is to encourage enthusiasm amongst young Holstein breeders and support them as they progress their farming careers and showing skills.
