Devon's Trip to North Wales

The Devon Holstein Club took a trip to North West Wales on 10th-13thJune.

31 members and friends travelled firstly to Grosvenor Farms in Chester.  We were very impressed with this extremely large unit.  Averaging over 12,000 litres.  This is a very good advert for large scale Dairy farming. Mark Roach showed us around and we had a lengthy discussion on the future of British Dairy Farming.

On Tuesday we travelled to Anglesey and visited W J & H Williams and family, Clwch herd. This was a real family farm similar to our own. The herd had just been awarded the 2019 Master Breeder award and it was easy to see why; an excellent herd of cows.

In the afternoon we went to Trevor Lloyd’s Islandpride herd.  The cows were housed in a very tidy modern unit.  They were a very good herd of cows producing a lot of milk. Trevor was very enthusiastic and willing to try something different, and we had a very lively discussion about a group of Swedish Procross heifers that were calving down!

Wednesday morning we went to Caernarfon Castle.  After lunch we went to see Richard Williams Clynnog herd, grazing by the beach.  This herd has won the small herds competition many times, the cows were exceptional, averaging 88.2pts on classification.

On Thursday morning Aled Jones showed us around the Hendy herd and his farm.  This was a large herd with many impressive cows. He had recently installed a rotary parlour and other building works were still in progress. He gave us lots of ideas to think about on our own farms.

We would like to thank Dyfrig Hughes for his contact information and all the farms that we visited and their hospitality that made this such an enjoyable trip.
